It’s time for me to blow off some steam. So Comcast sent me some an advertisement in the mail last November with an offer for 12 Mbps down, 2 Mbps up at the outrageously low price of $29.99 a month for 6 months. Even at the price they are going to charge me after 6 months is up is still great for the bandwidth I get. When I did a speed test at speakeasy.net and along with Comcast’s PowerBoost technology, I got 18 Mbps down and 8 Mbps up. Incredible! They also don’t require any contract. To test this out, I decided to download an ISO from our rack at Sungard…I was very impressed when it maintained 2MB/s (not megabits).

On December 2 I called Qwest to say I would like my service disconnected. The technician said OK, I hung up, unplugged my modem and thought all was good. I just received a bill in the mail for almost $180. Besides not disconnecting me (they say I was shut-off for non-payment, but I guess that means they can keep charging me), there speeds suck. I really need the upload speed, which they cripple to 768Kbps. The best download I got was 3Mbps. They also charge $60 a month for this service.

After sitting on the phone with an hour tonight they won’t remove the charges, can see my modem hasn’t been connected since December 2 AND they have it noted in there computer that I requested to be disconnected on December 2, I got no where.

For those of you that need bandwidth and good customer service at a reasonable rate, I would recommend Comcast. I used to be a DSL fan because of cable using shared bandwidth on your node, but what I ended up with from Qwest was a slow shared DSL connection, shitty customer service, an online payment system that didn’t work, expensive and to top it off Microsoft MSN as my ISP (giving any money to Microsoft makes me want to gag).

I’m sure Qwest assumes I’m just some other dissatisfied customer, but being a systems administrator and my friends generally asking my opinion of anything computer related, I’ll do my best to get anyone to drop Qwest that I can. I’ve already got 3 people to switch just by bragging about my connection speeds. So maybe the 10-15 people I convince to stay away from Qwest won’t hurt them, but I’m sure I’m not the only one dissatisfied which might end up hurting them. For those of you with Qwest phone service, with number portability, you might as well switch the number to a cell phone or VOIP solution (Vonage rules - plus they support Asterisk). Nuff said.
